The City of Bexley was formed as a village in 1908. Bexley officially became a city in 1931 and at that time had six officers. Today, the department has 28 sworn officers consisting of one chief, one captain, one detective sergeant, four patrol sergeants, 18 patrol officers, two detectives, one animal control officer, one parking control officer, one administrative assistant, one clerk of courts and one fire inspector. In the earlier days, police officers patrolled Bexley on horseback, by bicycle, motorcycle and eventually automobile.
