Statement from Brian Steel on the resignation of Jeffrey Happ, Chief of the Columbus Division of Fire
I have known Chief Jeffrey Happ for more than 20 years. Long before he became Chief, he served as an arson investigator and attended the 109th Columbus Police Recruit Class alongside me. Over the course of my career, I have seen many Chiefs come and go in both the Division of Fire and the Division of Police, often without much notice. Chief Happ is different.
He is one of the most ethical, professional, and principled leaders I have ever known. His love for the Division of Fire, his respect for Local 67, and his unwavering devotion to the community he dedicated his life to serving are nothing short of remarkable. Chief Happ led with integrity, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility to both his members and the city of Columbus.
I am grateful for his friendship, his leadership, and his many years of service to our beloved city. I wish Chief Happ nothing but success, happiness, and fulfillment as he begins the next chapter of his life.
Brian Steel
